There is something about September that calls for a change and a refresh as Autumn fast approaches. Everyone is back to work or school after the long summer holidays so it is a great opportunity to clear out and change your home decor for the cosy season. When September comes around it often brings with it a sombre feeling knowing that summer is ending.. this soon goes away when you realise you can bring out those comfy cardigans and fluffy slippers again and cocoon yourself with a good excuse...It's freezing outside!
The same feeling can be applied to our home decor, making the home cosy and preparing for the winter ahead is one of life's simple pleasures. The Scandinavian's even have a word for it with their long dark winters "Hygge" - savouring the simple things and creating comfort in the home with candles and soft throws.
A hot cup of coffee or matcha tea seems to taste better in a rustic, textured mug or a steaming bowl of soup or noodles feel better in crockery with a hand made look and feel. I love the range of 1970's crockery by HKLIVING, with its nostalgic nod to my childhood years mixed with a real rustic organic look and feel. I have my favourite mug that I look for every morning!
Soft lighting can create a calm, restful atmosphere with portable table lamps to light up dark corners and soft pendant lights that don't show up the wrinkles are always a bonus in the depths of winter!
Rich velvet cushions and fluffy wool textures add instant cosiness to the living room and bedroom, soft squishy sheepskin rugs can be used on the sofa or the floor for the same effect.
This rug in front of a fireplace or a pile of books would be my spot for the coming months!
